The following mission statements by linguists and literary scholars working in different institutional and cultural contexts and at different stages of their careers are intended to map out the terrain covered by this journal. They tell similar stories about how these scholars came to cross the disciplinary boundary that too often divides their two fields, and they reveal a number of shared interests and emphases. But they also highlight the diversity of methodologies to which this journal is open – from metrics and stylistics to the cognitive sciences and Systemic Functional Grammar. Brian Friel’s concern about the role and the value of the act of translation certainly reminds the reader of James Joyce’s famous words on the cultural – and most of all linguistic – differences between the protagonist of his book and the English headmaster of the school he works at. Šajā darbā tiek pētīti leksiskie stilistiskie valodas izteiksmes līdzekļi Dž.R.R Tolkīna fantāzijas novelē Kalējs no Lielās Vutonas. Tolkīnam bija unikāls rakstīšanas stils, kurā galveno lomu spēlēja iztēle un alegoriska valoda, jo viņš uzskatīja, ka mītu vai pasakas būtību var pārnest izmantojot tikai šadu valodu. Kalējs no Lielas Vutonas bija Tolkīna pedējais literārais darbs, kurš tika izdots viņa dzīves laikā, un tajā bija daudz alegorieski tēli, kuri pēc pētnieku domām atspoguļoja Tolkīnas dzīvi. Mākslinieciskās izteiksmes līdzekļi rakstos par ekonomiku

Šajā bakalaura darbā tiek pētīts stilistisko ierīču lietojums un to nolūks The Economist laikrakstu rakstos par ekonomiku. Šajā darbā izmantotā pētījuma metode ir diskursa analīze, balstīta uz Galperina (1977) stilistisko ierīču klasifikāciju. Darbā apskatīta stilistikas kā nozares izcelsme, attīstība un klasifikācija. Pētījuma rezultāti liecina, ka žurnālistikā par ekonomiku tiek izmantotas dažādas stilistikās ierīces, un visbiežāk izmantotās stilistiskās ierīces kā spriedze, citāti, metaforas un aliterācija. Papildus tam tiek secināts, ka tekstā esošie līdzekļi palīdz rakstos izmantotajā valodā izcelt dramatisku efektu, kā arī sniegt tekstam papildus informāciju.

The advantages of applying the concept of rhetorical style in language-oriented Journalism Studies

This article begins with a delineation of the context of contemporary professional joumalism, particularly its markel-driven, technologically advanced and discursively diverse character. Journalism studies scholars trace media evolution with the aid of content analyses. On the other hand, linguists, including stylisticians, try to capture recent changes in media language with the use of qualitative methods, e.g., with categories derived from discourse analysis, which enable them to see how hegemonie discourses are (re)constructed in journalistic texts. A Stylistic Analysis of the English Translations of Machiavelli's The Prince: Mansfield, Skinner and Connell

The Prince is counted among those political works which gave rise to modern political science. Linguists have shown how the writing technique, that makes The Prince a unique work, is one of the main instruments used by Machiavelli to persuade his addressee to adopt the political tactics he was recommending. On the basis of their Italian studies on The Prince, the paper analyses how Machiavelli’s style was transferred from Italian into English in the most recent and authoritative English translations by Harvey C.
